Like Lugol’s Iodine, Acetic acid enhances abnormal cervical tissue for improved visualization. On application of acetic acid, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions take on a white color. Some studies have determined that colposcopic imaging with Acetic Acid is more accurate than Lugol’s Iodine for detecting cervical premalignant lesions in patients with abnormal pap smear test results. Acetic Acid is also easier to use, as it does not stain everything it comes into contact with like iodine does.
